Roster reactions

Let's start from the back with the keepers. I have no issues with the selections at all. Lapierre is a tier above the rest of the class in my opinion and looking like a top 10 player in this class. The tier below Lapierre has a lot of interesting players and I group Silva and Bayraktarov in that bucket. I also really like Parker Henry from Colorado Rapids and rate him a little higher than Silva and Bayraktarov, but it's close. It's a strong group.

At left-back, Odom is a very talented player, though I was concerned by his performance against England a couple months back and I tempered my excitement on him a bit. Civil definitely has some interesting tools and must have done well in his first camp last month. I rate a couple of players over him — for example LB, Isaiah Fabunmi, D.C. United and LB, Matthew Brusco, Cedar Stars Bergen, who plays as a left-winger for his club but has the profile to be a very high-level left-back.

At right-back, I haven't seen any players separate themselves from the pack, so I am not overly opinionated on this position.

At center-back, I think there are some players that I see bigger futures for but maybe are not the best center-backs today. Of the guys selected, I think Reggie Bailey has the highest ceiling, though he struggled a bit at GA Cup. Colin Panarelli is one of a couple completely new names. He is an undersized left-footed center-back that played well at GA Cup. I am not sure I see a huge upside, but appreciate that he put in some very good performances recently. Caleb Chabala, Malachi Joseph, Kai Simmonds and Mason Washington are center-backs that I rate higher long term. Unfortunately Washington will be with Mexico for these friendlies.

At defensive midfield, Adewunmi, Ros and Shang can also play as a six and they are all good players and deserve to be here. Adewunmi was fantastic at GA Cup and a rising prospect for me. Ros is a top 15 prospect for me in this class. Shang gets invited back after his first camp and he was also very good at GA Cup. He put up an excellent performance against Barca. He had an assist and should have had another.

Nick Harris is the top defensive-midfield name not here, which is surprising to me given his involvement in USYNT camps to date and his positive performances at GA Cup.

The more box-to-box options are Levi Welch, Cosimo Tristani and Elvis Caushaj. I am not mad at any of these selections — they are all highly competent soccer players. The one name that I would love to see in this group soon is CM, Jaethan Irwin, Phoenix Rising. He has a physical profile that is in a different class than some of these other guys.

The more attacking midfielder for me is Ian Miller, who is a really unique player. He is a player with a great understanding of the game and a level of flair and creativity that we don't see a lot in the United States. His long-term position is a question for me. He can make plays from all over the field but is a little bit of a liability against the ball. Right now, I'd let him cook as a 10.

The top attacking midfielder in this class, Zamir Loyo Reynaga, is not here, which is a massive surprise. It is possible that he will be with Mexico, which would mean we are in for a challenging recruiting battle.

There are some very talented players within the winger group, but also two of the top prospects curiously not on the roster. Flowers is one of, if not the top player in this class, so he is a no-brainer. Nosa Osagie is getting his first camp and it is well deserved. He wasn't great at GA Cup but he has had a really impressive season so far. He might play as a vertical nine in this camp. Chea is a very talented 1v1 player but has struggled some this year. Vasquez Carmichael definitely caught my attention at GA Cup as a left-footed winger that can cut in on his left foot from the right flank.

The two big winger names not here are Daniel Brown and Chris Fitanidis. Both are top 10 players, maybe top five in this class. Brown is injured and I am not sure what the reasoning is for Fitanidis — he was one of the top players at GA Cup. Leo Woehl and Ryan Schlotterbeck are two other names that I would have selected over one or two that were selected.

The best striker in this class for me, Santi Suarez, is here. The next best option is Romualdo Aguirre, who was recently with the United States. He was at GA Cup with Monterrey's U-16 team but didn't play after the first couple of games and must have injured himself. The group behind him is a little uninspiring, so I am all for Osagie getting the backup nine reps.

Top eligible players that have not been in camp

AM, Jackson "Papo" Gordon, Valencia CF
Gordon is in contact with U.S. Soccer but unfortunately out for the season with injury.

W/LB, Matthew Brusco, Cedar Stars Bergen
Brusco was one of the standout players at GA Cup, showing that his production is not limited to non-academy competition. His pace, service and movement were all on display. He amassed something like six goal contributions in Cedar Stars' first five competitive games and looked dangerous throughout. He plays on the left wing and his profile also works very well as a left-back. This is an ascending prospect.

W, Leo Woehl, Columbus Crew
Woehl is left out once again. He had some really bright moments at GA Cup, so hopefully his opportunity is around the corner.

CM, Jaethan Irwin, Phoenix Rising
Irwin has a truly elite profile in midfield and has been integrated with the Phoenix Rising first team already.

LB, Andre Campbell, Inter Miami
Campbell is a player I continue to rate in this class. He is a two-way left-back that does a lot of things well. Hopefully he gets his chance soon.

CB, Mason Washington, LAFC
Unfortunately Washington will be playing for the opposition, Mexico, in this window. Even more unfortunate that Mexico identified this player to bring into a camp first. Washington is without a doubt one of the top center-backs in this class, so this is a miss by U.S. Soccer.

CB, Malachi Joseph, New York Red Bulls

Joseph has a great combination of size, strength and ability on the ball, though he can struggle defending in space at times. There are enough intriguing tools for him to warrant a look.

CB, Kai Simmonds, Philadelphia Union

Simmonds struggled a bit at GA Cup, as did a lot of Philadelphia Union players, but he has the size, range and tenacity that I love in a center-back. He has to learn how to control that tenacity better.

CB, Pietro Lolos, New York Red Bulls
If U.S. Soccer want to prioritize undersized center-backs with great game understanding, why not choose the best player with that profile? For me, that is Lolos. He was very good at GA Cup.

DM, Hudson Cicala, FC Cincinnati
Cicala has a super polished game as a six and does a ton of things at an above-average level. He deserves a look in the near future.

AM/W, Maxwell Camara, D.C. United
Camara has a super unique profile and skillset. He has great size, he is very smooth and tricky on the ball and he plays with a lot of confidence. I am not sure what position he ends up playing long term, but I think he is a player that deserves an opportunity in the near future.

CF, Carson Starrett, Inter Miami?
I have heard rumblings that the Starrett + Inter Miami relationship has run its course and he has left the program.

Roster grade: B+

The 2011 class is very deep, so every roster is going to have some really talented and deserving players left off of it. That is just the reality when you start developing really deep classes. With that said, I like the goalkeeper and midfield groups for the most part. I am fine with the full-back selections. And while there are some exciting players in attack, not having Loyo Reynaga, Brown and Fitanidis hurts. Center-back is a position that I consistently disagree on with U.S. Soccer on selections, especially on the younger age groups, and once again I think they are choosing players that are tactically better right now, but I question the upside down the road. At striker, the Suarez/Osagie pairing is really dynamic and interesting.

Overall, only two players getting their first camp, which is somewhat understandable given the games against Mexico, though I would like to see that number closer to five for these younger age groups. There are some good selections here and some really puzzling ones. But I kind of always say that, don't I?
