U-16 USYNT April roster analysis

April 2026

Eddie Niles, attacking-midfielder for St. Louis City

The United States U-16 (2010) team have the wonderful opportunity to face England (April 16), Mexico (April 19) and Argentina (April 22) on home soil in Miami at the newly formed Vertex Cup. I can't remember the last time an international youth tournament was hosted within the United States. The Nike friendlies? U.S. Soccer also reported that this tournament will be broadcasted, but the details of the broadcast aren't available yet.

Roster reactions

Head coach Paul Sampson has decided not to bring any first-team invitees to this tournament, relying on players with a lot of U.S. Youth National Team experience.

The goalkeeper group features two of the top keepers in this class in Connor Dale and Jason Nemo, but my third-ranked keeper in this class, GK, Jackson Dale, Seattle Sounders, isn't here. Instead Abram Judy is here, and he seems to have really caught U.S. Soccer's eye.

At left back, I like the selections of Fakiyesi and Soria. Fakiyesi is my top-rated left back in the class.

At right back, Alexander-Munoz continues to be the first-choice option. Lennox Alvarado impressed me at GA Cup. These aren't my top two right backs in this class — I still can't wrap my head around RB, Dominick Lester, FC Cincinnati not yet getting an opportunity in camp, though there could be factors behind the scenes we're not aware of.

Center back is one of the position groups I'm most concerned with. This is consistently a position where I view things differently than U.S. Soccer. From what I can see, they don't place a high enough value on physical profile at a position that demands a lot physically. I'm aligned with the selection of Miles Aalbersberg, who I view as one of the top center backs in this class, and we're in a dual-national recruiting battle with the Netherlands for him. Arne does bring a physical presence but has some weaknesses in distribution. U.S. Soccer clearly rate Antongirolami high — he's consistently called into camps, and his left-footedness doesn't hurt. Mulvenna is an undersized center back, but he's a fierce competitor and leader, and I'm sure U.S. Soccer really values those traits.

I would have liked to see CB, Mikel Akinmboni, D.C. United here. He received his first camp invite in March, but D.C. United decided to play him in midfield at GA Cup, and I'm sure that didn't help his chances of getting into this roster. I also really like CB, Antoni James, Orlando City — a new center back at Orlando City that should get an opportunity in a lower-stakes camp soon.

At defensive midfield, my top-rated 2010 is here — Nathan Tchoumba — and he's accompanied by Chris Morales. One of the more questionable decisions is not bringing DM, David Ilevbare, Atlanta United, who is one of the most talented players in this class, though it's possible Atlanta United didn't release him for this window.

In central midfield, Abdoulaye Diop is the only one that brings box-to-box qualities, and he's a top player in this class. The other player I'd love to see here is CM, Kamil Castillo, D.C. United, but it may be that he can't yet play in official games for U.S. Soccer until he files a one-time switch away from Dominican Republic — and he may not be ready to do that yet, understandably. Many of the other top options are likely playing with Mexico — Matthew Arana and Lisandro Torres. And one other Mexican-American who is playing with the United States, Vinny Garcia, has been promoted to the U-17 team.

At attacking midfield, the group is led by Eddie Niles and Robert Turdean — two dynamic final-third players.

The winger group lacks 1v1 dynamism outside of Ikenna Chidebe. Much like center back, I'm consistently misaligned with the type of profiles I prefer at winger. I prefer pace, power and 1v1 ability. U.S. Soccer seems to prefer a more technical profile, and without knowing the full picture, it's possible there are development reasons behind those choices that aren't visible from the outside.

Three strikers have been selected and all of them are high-quality players. Danjaji brings the verticality and pace, while Kimbrough and Kraus can connect and find space in the final third. Kimbrough has been bouncing back and forth between the United States and Mexico, and this would be the first time he's playing with the United States against Mexico.

Top eligible players not in camp

CB, Max Gordon, Bayer Leverkusen
Gordon is a top player in this class and has consistently been called into Germany's team. I've been told that U.S. Soccer is in contact with him, but it's not clear if he's willing to come into a camp.

CM, Matthew Arana, Houston Dynamo
Arana has been invited but has not been released for a U.S. camp. He will either not be released or be with Mexico for this window.

CB, Antoni James, Orlando City
James should be in a camp soon. He has a fantastic profile and is doing well at Orlando City.

CF/W, Easton Wilson, Real Salt Lake
Wilson had a nice GA Cup and has caught the eye of U.S. Soccer. He should get looks on the wing, but the striker position is a tough one to break into in this class.

W, Deandre Beckford, Chicago Fire
Beckford didn't have the impact I expected at GA Cup, but he's young and the talent is there. It's a matter of time before he gets into a camp.

W, Theo Hallie II, FC Dallas
Hallie is still waiting for his opportunity.

W, Josh Boney, FC Cincinnati
Boney just got back to playing at GA Cup and is the profile I like at the winger position.

RB, Dominick Lester, FC Cincinnati
Lester was very good at GA Cup in the games I saw. He's been a top right back in this class for a few years. It's puzzling that he hasn't yet been called into a camp, though there may be circumstances we simply aren't privy to.

CM, Ezra Mehteme, San Jose Earthquakes
Mehteme has great tools and game understanding.

CB, Landon "LJ" Born, FC Cincinnati
Born is a player I've enjoyed watching every time I see him live. He has great size and can play on the ball.

W/CF, Jayden Kouadio, Philadelphia Union
Kouadio is still inconsistent and can get lost in games at times, but the talent is good enough to justify a look at some point.

LB, Roman Avakian Gomez, FSV Mainz 05
Avakian Gomez did well in his first Mexico camp. He probably would have been with Mexico in this tournament had he been released.

Roster grade: B+

The roster features many of the top 2010s in the class, including Dale, Nemo, Fakiyesi, Aalbersberg, Tchoumba, Diop, Niles, Turdean, Chidebe, Danjaji, Kimbrough and Kraus. The most questionable omission of a player that could have been here is David Ilevbare, though it's possible that Atlanta United didn't release him. Max Gordon may have been invited and not released since this isn't an official FIFA window. Vinny Garcia is now a U-17 player, and Kamil Castillo may not yet be ready to commit to the USA long term.

The strengths of this team will be at goalkeeper, in the midfield and at striker. I worry about the center backs' ability to handle more physical attackers and their ability to consistently play out of pressure. And I also worry about the winger group being able to create danger consistently outside of Ikenna Chidebe.

It's a good squad that should compete admirably against top competition.
