Roster Reactions
Goalkeepers
I really like this group and each will get a chance to start a game against Brazil. GK, Toby Szewczyk, New York Red Bulls is a top prospect, and GK, Philipp Eckle, FC Augsburg gets his first USYNT camp. Eckle has been in several German Youth National Team camps and is also an intiguing prospect. Ironically, the top 2009 German keeper is also German-American — that's Leo Prescott, who plays for Bayern Munich's Academy. His presence may lead Eckle to give the United States program a harder look.
Full-backs
LB, Prince Forfor, Columbus Crew is the unquestioned LB1 for this group — there's nothing really to talk about there. The right-backs and Vejrostek can provide cover on the left side. The right-back position continues to have bigger questions. In the last camp, Aldaz brought in Dutch-American RB, Joshua Wilbrenninck, Feyenoord, but I believe he was injured before camp and may not have played. In this camp, another European-based player gets his first USYNT camp — RB, Mattias Fernandez, Atletico Madrid. The former Inter Miami Academy player has been with Atleti for a few years now and will have a chance to grab hold of a position that's been problematic for this group.
RB, Eddie Chadwick, has been the consistent selection here, though his performances have been so-so and he hasn't been officially attached to a club for a full season. Assuming he's been available and healthy throughout, it's fair to wonder whether the staff might look more seriously at other options.
There are other right-backs deserving of a harder look — RB, Jack Francka, Sporting Kansas City has become a locked starter for their second team, and from what I have seen, RB, Nash Dearmin, Inter Miami looks like the best option at the position. Though there may be factors behind the scenes we're simply not seeing.
Center-backs
The center-back group returns two of the three players from last camp in Di Noto and Vejrostek. Mbaye also returns to the group. Tyson Espy, widely considered the top center-back in this age group, is not here. He recently returned from an injury, so this is likely U.S. Soccer and Orange County being cautious.
Two players I'd like to see with this group are Ethan Degny from Nice and Rondell "RJ" White from Inter Miami. Degny has been with the group before, but White hasn't. White has incredible tools and has some experience in MLS Next Pro. His time should come soon.
Defensive/Central-midfielders
The pivots include Cadigan, Molinari, Spivey, and Suarez-Couri, who can also play as a ten. Cadigan is getting his first USYNT camp and has played serviceably in MLS Next Pro, which helped him earn this opportunity. Molinari and Spivey have been mainstays in the roster. I'm glad to see Suarez-Couri back in the group — he's played well in MLS Next Pro and was recently included in a Venezuelan Youth National Team camp.
The biggest miss for me, from what I can see, is Lucas Bruegmann from Hoffenheim, who I hear is doing extremely well in Germany. There could be more to this story — and there very well may be — but I'd love to see him with this group at the U-17 World Cup. He was in the last camp. The other name I continue to pine for is Judah Siqueira, who can play as an eight, ten or winger. I've liked his performances in MLS Next Pro, and without knowing the full picture, it's hard to understand why he hasn't gotten more looks.
Attacking-midfielders/Wingers
The attacking-mids are Bansoodeb, Garcia, and Turdean. Garcia can also play as an eight and Turdean can play on the wing. Garcia and Turdean are the two 2010 players on the roster. Garcia has been playing up for some time, but Turdean hasn't since he was a U-14 playing with the USYNT U-15s a couple of years ago. Turdean had a very good U-16 camp in Florida a month ago, which helped him get here. Bansoodeb is back for his second camp after his inaugural call-up in March — he had two assists in a 30-minute sub appearance in the last camp, which must have left a big mark on the staff. He's picking up good momentum heading into the U-17 World Cup.
The wingers are Hyte, Ostrander, and Wumah — a complete rotation from the last group. Hyte has been playing pretty well in MLS Next Pro, a nice rebound after his star started to fade over the last year or so. Ostrander continues to be in and out of the group and seems like a player that's likely going to the U-17 World Cup — he was productive in his first full season at PSV. Wumah is a name that's been known as a dual-national, but I haven't seen him play, so I have no idea what to expect — it's always great to see U.S. Soccer on top of these things.
This appears to be one of the most competitive groups heading into the U-17 World Cup without many locks. Myles Gardner and Omar Hassan have both been considered top wingers for this group at times, but both are absent here. Hassan is just getting himself back into fitness after a long injury absence, and Makai Wells is another candidate who's been dealing with some injuries. Gardner's absence doesn't have a clear public explanation, so there may well be factors at play that we simply aren't aware of.
Center-forwards
Jakupovic is the main man and one of the most important players in this class. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets promoted to the 2008 team after the U-17 World Cup.
Hines is getting his first USYNT camp, and I'd say it's been a long time coming. He's a totally different striker than Jakupovic — he operates more in the channels and wants to run behind the backline, and he also has experience playing on the wing. The striker position behind Jakupovic has been a concern, and perhaps Hines can solidify it.
Roster grade: A-
Philosophically, I like what Aldaz and U.S. Soccer are doing here. A few players are getting their first opportunity in positions that need competition, and they've brought in some dual nationals for the first time. There are some core guys here to provide continuity and the overall roster construction from a position/skillset perspective largely makes sense. Fernandez and Wumah are mysteries to me, so I have no idea whether their selections are deserving — we'll soon find out. The one persistent concern, from what we can see, is the continued reliance on Chadwick at right-back, though the staff may have context on that situation we simply don't have.
